HM Forces Railcard for Personnel & Spouses

The HM Forces Railcard costs £15 and it'll save you 1/3 on most rail fares throughout Great Britain for a whole year. That works out to under £2 a month for huge savings. You're eligible if you're a member of the Regular Forces or a spouse of a member, for more details see eligibility.
There are plenty of ways you can use your Railcard, for both long and short trips. Better still you can use it anytime on weekends, Public Holidays and during the week. The only restriction is that if you travel before 10am Monday to Friday (except during July and August) a minimum fare will apply. For more details see minimum fares.
Your HM Forces Railcard will save you 1/3 on many tickets. As with most things in life, there are some exceptions, so take a look at the ticket types you can and can't make savings on with your HM Forces Railcard.

Forces Help To Buy Scheme Extended

The Secretary of State for Defence has announced the excellent news that the very popular Forces Help To Buy scheme will be extended into 2018. As you will be aware, the scheme which was launched in 2014, allows serving military personnel to borrow up to half their salary up to a cap of £25,000, interest free over ten years so they can buy their first home, extend a current one or move up the property ladder.

The news is featured on the Armed Forces Covenant website https://www.armedforcescovenant.gov.uk/housing-development/ and includes comments from L/Cpl Baffour Asante whose family has benefited from the scheme.

Give Us Time: Matching donated holidays with service families

Give Us Time takes holidays donated by owners of holiday groups, hotels, holiday homes and timeshares, and matches them with military families in need of rest, rehabilitation and reconnection after tours of duty. The charity was founded in 2012 by Dr Liam Fox MP who, in his time as an Army medic and later as Secretary of State for Defence, became aware that homecomings were not always as easy as might be expected for service personnel or their families.

Often after months away from home, the family dynamic can change considerably and it can be stressful for both the service personnel and their families to readjust to a life together again, in a domestic situation that may be different to how it was before they left. Give Us Time helps service families reconnect to life after combat and provides them with the chance to spend time together and to reaffirm their family bond.

TV Licence iPlayer Change: What you need to know......

New TV licence rules have come into force, with changes affecting people who watch BBC programmes on iPlayer.
As before, anyone watching or recording TV programmes as they are broadcast must have a licence.

Find out:

How has the law changed?

What can I watch without a TV licence?

What are the rules for students?

How can TV Licensing check whether I have a licence or need one?

What are the penalties for not having a licence?

Where can I get a licence?

TV Licences are available online from the TV Licensing website.
You can also purchase one by post or telephone, or at one of more than 28,000 PayPoint outlets across the UK.

Armed forces personnel

A TV Licence is not included in your monthly food and accommodation charges. In Ministry of Defence (MOD) living accommodation, on or off base, you need to be covered by a TV Licence if you watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV – on any device. That includes TVs, computers, tablets, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and DVD/VHS recorders.
It’s your responsibility to check if you need a TV Licence and buy one if you do. The Ministry of Defence fully supports us in applying the law regarding TV Licensing. If we find evidence you’re watching TV illegally, you risk prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.
A TV Licence costs £145.50. You can spread the cost with a Direct Debit or pay in one go.

Forces Enterprise Network - Career & Business Support

The Forces Enterprise Network, Recruit for Spouses and Evolution Forces Families have announced the creation of a new careers and enterprise company ‘Forces Enterprise Network Hub’ a fully integrated organisation which aims to transform the provision of careers and business support for the ‘whole’ Armed Forces Community.

FEN Hub exists to provide members of our Armed Forces community with the skills, resources and practical tools needed to be successful in whatever route to employment they choose, either by starting and maintaining a business or securing employment.

We bring our passion for business, experience in recruitment, knowledge of financial services and expertise in delivering training programmes and business networking to our defence community, and together we are making a difference in the lives of tri-service members, veterans, reservists, spouses and their families.

Christine Dedman, Director at Forces Enterprise Network says: “Our newly established organisation is a natural fit, together we can provide extended services to the whole Armed Forces community drawing on our individual strengths and in-depth understanding of the defence community in which we operate.”

Through our combined experience we have created a social enterprise designed specifically to meet the needs of our Armed Forces personnel, their spouses, veterans and reservists. We aim to offer a comprehensive support utilising our combined connections. Our partnership unites our individual members and works in response to the changing shift in employment options, MoD and government policy to support further the choices and support available in employment and self-employment to the Armed Forces community.

Heledd Kendrick, CEO at Recruit for Spouses says: “Recruit for Spouses believes that no military spouse should have their career subjugated because of their attachment to the Armed Forces.”
FEN Hub offers extended member services via online business support, downloadable guides on a range of employment and self-employment topics, mentoring, seminars and representation. A network of business support hubs across the UK’s MoD bases, British Forces Germany, Belgium and Cyprus has strengthened the outreach FEN Hub can provide to our members in their local communities and encourages peer supervision, creating a unique business network of entrepreneurs from a previously undervalued, high-quality resource of professionals from our Armed Forces Community.

Nadine Monks, Director at Evolution Forces Families says: “EFF’s mission statement is to improve the financial outcomes and futures of the military community through the services we offer. As part of this we recognise that a second income or aspirations beyond a service career can be integral to the planning of this. We are delighted to be part of this uniquely holistic approach to addressing these needs.”

Service Family Accommodation (SFA) Garage Allocations

In order to ensure the effective allocation of block garages CarillionAmey will be posting notices on those garages that currently appear to have no owners.  The notices will clearly explain that the owner of the garage must contact the CarillionAmey Helpdesk on 0800 707 6000 option 3 to advise that they own it.  The notice will be dated and remain on the garage for a full calendar month from the date shown.  If no contact has been made with the Helpdesk, CarillionAmey will be required to change the locks on the garage and dispose of any items bar vehicles. Licensees of Service Family Accommodation are reminded that as part of the licence agreement signed by all occupants of SFA that any items stored in garages, other than cars, are stored at the risk of the licensee.

Carillionamey - Patch Management

Improving the way we manage your patch

As part of the improvement plan, CarillionAmey have rolled out a new initiative which we are hoping will assist with better communication. Each Accommodation Officer (AO) is responsible for making regular checks on the Service Family homes and the surrounding communal areas for which they are responsible. They conduct regular inspections looking out for things such as graffiti, fallen trees, and potholes in roads. During their walk-around they also take a look at the exterior of properties, and may often notice things that families miss, such as a leaking drainpipe or blocked guttering and should alert the occupants so that a job can be raised.

Nowadays with so many families where both partners work, sometimes issues are identified when no one is home, and although the AO will raise the job with the Helpdesk, families may only find out about it when an engineer arrives to complete the job. We recognise that may be a concern for some families so CarillionAmey’s new patch management inspection card aims to solve this problem. Once the AO has identified an issue with the exterior of a property, the details will be completed on the card and posted through the letterbox, helping to prevent small repairs becoming bigger ones.

Enhanced Learning Credits, Further Education and Higher Education scheme changes
The MOD promotes learning among members of the armed forces and the veterans’ community by providing what are known as Learning Credits, through the Enhanced Learning Credits scheme and Further Education and Higher Educaion scheme.  Both of these entitle Service personnel and Service leavers to receive financial help with the cost of their learning.
From 1 April 2016 there will be some changes to the schemes to make them more accessible and to enable people to use them to gain personal and professional qualifications in a more flexible way, both while serving and after transition to civilian life.
